Don Valley Engineering were awarded a prestigious contract from a global drinks supply company to refurbish one of their malting plants in Northern Scotland. The plant had suffered years of corrosion from the use of heavy fuel oil in the kiln and decades of full utilisation. The scope of works included:
- Large specialised stainless steel handling machines
- Replacement vessel roof
- New kiln fans; swapping a single fan for two units for improved plant availability.
- Reconfiguration of ductwork, new energy building & dampers
- Supply & installation of a water/glycol air preheater system using hot return water from the adjacent distillery steam plant
- Relining of vessels
- Recladding of the vessels & heater building.
- New stainless steel germination ducting
- Major repairs to corroded structural steelwork requiring constant structural design input and fast track manufacture of new members.
- High pressure grain humidification system to minimise water usage.
- New barley washing machine to help client comply with water usage targets
- CDM site management over civil, mechanical, electrical and building services elements. The site management was very complex with zero waste to landfill, zero harm policy, multiple contractors on site and a significant amount of working on existing structures at height.
The plant is in full operation and the barley washing machine and humidification systems are providing significant water savings.
